What is Type III hard coat?
Type III, commonly called hard coat, is a thicker and denser anodic coating grown under tighter process control. It is the finish for parts that live hard lives: sliding surfaces, tooling, fixtures, actuators, and anything the print marks for wear. A non-sealed hard coat gives the best wear resistance; sealing improves corrosion protection at a small cost in surface hardness. We run both, to the callout.

The one decision that matters on hard coat.
Non-sealed hard anodic coating provides the best wear resistance. Sealed hard coat trades a little of that wear performance for better corrosion resistance. Your print usually decides; when it does not, tell us what the part does and we will recommend one.

Hard coat plus PTFE.
When the drawing wants hard coat and a low-friction surface, we impregnate the hard anodic coating with PTFE for a dry-lubricated finish. That combination is its own service line: PTFE impregnated surface treatment. For decorative and general-purpose work, Type II is usually the better-value call. MIL-A-8625 governs both types; the specification text is on the government spec library at quicksearch.dla.mil.

How thick is hard coat?
Thickness is built to the print's callout. Hard coat penetrates and builds more than Type II, so dimension-critical features should carry the coating allowance on the drawing.
Can hard coat be dyed?
We run hard coat in clear and black. Because the coating is dense and often dark by nature, color work is a Type II conversation.
Do you expedite hard coat?
Yes. Standard is 3 to 4 days and expedites run as fast as same day. Expedite requests get answered by text.
Does hard coat work on tight-tolerance parts?
Yes, when the drawing accounts for the coating. Hard coat penetrates and builds more than Type II, so put the allowance on the callout and we finish to it.
Can you strip and re-run a part?
Talk to us before assuming. Stripping removes base metal along with the coating, so dimension-critical parts need that conversation first.
